On that note, Leith takes us through all the nouns, pronouns, verbs, punctuations, and all forms of hidden and open traps that no matter which side we take, there may be a counter-attack from the other camp. There are rules because we need rules to write clearly and make ourselves understood.
Hence, Leith draws on myriad examples of incomprehensible, and even absurd writing passing off as learned writing.
Clear. Simple. Friendly.
And that means we must employ clear writing as a solvent for muddied thought. Hence, we stick to rules to be consistent and understood; but he also takes us through examples of when breaking the rules seem to produce clearer sentences than compliance with the rules.

There are three things that had me reading "Write to the Point" from cover to cover as if it were a captivating novel; the author's conversational style, which he openly admits was something he was going for, his sense of humour, and the fact that this book is about much more than just grammar and text. Sam Leith's book is a master-class in communication.
It describes how to win over an audience, how to keep the audience on your side, and how to make life easy for your reader. As I was reading through his book I was thinking at several points, "Oh! That's what Trump did! His writing is so clear I was able to recognise the approaches being described in the real world without difficulty. I learned a lot from this book, enjoyed reading it, and will refer to it often. Excellent, clear, witty, full of light-shedding anecdotes; a grown-up book, but accessible, and head and shoulders above any competitors I have read.
You can read plenty of book reviews by Sam Leith in many of the leading national papers and magazines, he writes a lot of them. He also writes great assessments of important public speeches too. He knows his stuff and his comments are insightful and more importantly, educational. The point is, if you want to express yourself and have an impact, you need to know how to do it. It's not luck. A clear description of the English language and how it should be written. A useful book for any budding author.
One person found this helpful. Leith enters a crowded marketplace of writing on writing, but does so in a more readable style than most. It's refreshing that he's not setting out to criticise how our language is evolving or how we've forgotten how x rule or y convention should work, instead embracing the importance of context. He argues it's more important that what you write fits where you write it, who will read it and what they'll take from it, doing so in a very conversational style himself.
A good read, if not groundbreaking for anyone with lots of other books like this on the shelf. Format: Hardcover. A model of clarity, this excellent book will be of enormous value to anyone who writes, or takes an interest in what other people write and how they do it. Sam Leith has made this a page-turner in its way; he catches your attention straight away and has you smiling pretty much all the way through.

Singer Faith Hill and Princess Eugenie have also invested in the appearance - and function - of their teeth. Therefore retainers are essential,' he says. This means they can stop your teeth ageing'. Sold on how much things have changed since my first foray into the dentist's chair, I got started with the new, improved process.
First, this involved a quick X-ray of my teeth to check their health, followed by impressions to create the reverse moulds needed to tailor-make my device. Discreet: The Inman Aligner device is virtually invisible and can be removed when necessary. I then had to have my teeth 'stripped'.
This saw a very thin strip of metal floss rubbed between them, filing them down on a microscopic level so they'd have space to move. Something which was surprisingly pain-free. Next, was my first public outing. Would it be obvious? Or would people stare? Not that they haven't become fashionable thanks to likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Little Mix's Perrie Edwards, of course. But, still, I wanted discretion - and, honestly, the only real give-away was a mild lisp which, colleagues assured, was less obvious than I feared.
Surely another selling point which helps explain why the Inman Aligner has become so successful since its launch in To date, more than , patients have had the treatment, , of them in the UK alone. Now, I'm proud to say I'm one of them. Punctuated with fortnightly check-ups, the six weeks of treatment flew by. Suddenly, I found myself on the home-stretch to a straight smile. Today, for the first time in twenty years, I have perfectly symmetrical teeth and it truly feels fantastic.
In fact, it might just be better second time around. The views expressed in the contents above are those of our users and do not necessarily reflect the views of MailOnline. Straight teeth in just 6 weeks? Share this article Share. For patients with mildly crowded front teeth, the Inman Aligner can be the most convenient treatment. It's better than clear aligners because it's faster weeks instead of months and significantly cheaper.
